This was a surprise find to me. A little hole in the wall, family restaurant that had squeeze bottles of Parkay on the tables didn't make me feel confident until the fresh, warm tortillas and fresh made salsa arrived. I was advised to put both the Parkay and the salsa on the tortilla, wrap it up like a burrito and - wow - ambrosia! I was there on a Tuesday, had the taquito special and now it is a favorite place for a quick, tasty work week lunch. The place packs at lunch so get there early! I'm a fan of the tortillas and you can buy them by the dozen! If you haven't found this jewel yet, make it a point to get to KCK for authentic mexican food!

Today my friend visiting from DC told me about this little mexican restaurant in KCK that she saw on travel advisor and wanted me to try it. I have a weakness for latin foods too so this decision was easy. This place is a little hole in the wall family restaurant. They served fresh hot flour tortillas with parkay and I even think grandma brought them to me. The dad was in the kitchen cooking it up and his kids were our servers. The menu was the cheapest I have seen in a long time. It was kind of unreal. I ordered a chicken burrito covered in cheese. It was delicious and I smothered it in this salsa they had on the table that was pretty spicy! There was only one major downfall for me.. everything that they served was served on or in styrofoam and the utensils were plastic. Boo. Kinda hurt my eco-friendly heart a little. Oh and they also had a kids menu and all the kids food was $3. I would definitely go back, maybe I will bring my own plate next time.

Stopped in here the other day and had lunch, It was OK. the tortillas that the bring out in place of the chips were great with butter. But I was not blown away with the rice or the tamales. I would go back for the tortillas, they were soft and warm. The service was great, two strapping young men with smiles and very friendly.

The food is good but the hand-made, fresh tortillas are from a high and holy place and are ordained of God. When they appeared at my table a shaft of light pierced through the clouds and I thought I heard angelic singing. Be sure to order a dozen to take home.

This is my favorite restaurant ever and everywhere. I've been going since I worked in KCK about ten years ago and happened upon it with co-workers. The salsa is pink, hot, and incredible. The tortillas are homemade and amazing. They serve tortillas and salsa instead of chips and salsa... slather on and roll up like a little burrito to eat. Then order the fried flour taco with beef. Uh-mazing. Buy extra tortillas and salsa to take home. Also, be prepared to have a breath mint later as the salsa sticks with you, but it's totally worth it.

This was the second stop on a taco crawl today. I had the crispy fried taco. It was unique but didn't have a lot of flavor. I borrowed another tables salsa and that added. I also bought a package of their tortillas, very good. I'm sure we will return and try more of the menu.

The $3.00 fried al pastor taco I ordered at the table on the second stop of Taco Crawl III was mildly seasoned, but tasty. The one salsa option at the table was also mild. The accompanying lettuce, tomatoes, and cheese were fresh and tasty. Complimentary flour tortillas and Parkay were available. The service was friendly, and efficient.

It was okay. The fresh tortillas are a plus for sure! The meat is okay but... All that authentic Wisconsin Cheddar Cheese... Didn't sit so well for me. To their credit, they are lavish with portions and the place was clearly packed for lunch. The value for the dollar is quite good and overall I was happy for lunch.

I can say enough good things about Ninfas!!! But most important.....TORTILLAS!!!!! The salsa and buttee make them that much better. I always buy some to take home and eat later. I am so glad i found this little gem!!!!

The tortillas are unbelievable. I really enjoy the enchiladas in the corn tortillas. I wish they were open longer & had real plates, but I guess that would take away some of the Ninfa's magic.

I have literally eaten hundreds of freshly made tortilla's from Ninfa's over the years. People tend to forget that Ninfa's was the first place in Kansas City Kansas to actually prepare "HOMEMADE" rolled from scratch flour tortilla's. The 'in' thing to do nowadays is go up the street to Tortilleria San Antonio Market and purchase their somewhat homemade tortillas that are assisted with a conveyer type machine. Not the hand rolled variety that workers still prepare and cook with their bare hands at Ninfa's. Trust me, there is a huge difference in quality and taste. Tortillas' are 5 Star all the way. You can still buy a dozen freshly made tortillas at Ninfa's for less than $2. When I say fresh, I'm talking the bag is still hot/warm many times. The tortillas just melt in your mouth. If I remember correctly, Ninfa's is still ran by the Garza family. I can remember watching the Garza elderly parents working the stoves and preparing glorious food for the customers. The Garza son (Mike?) and his wife are the owners and do a great job taking care of the customers. Yes, the place is tiny, dark, and old. So freaking what! This is old school eat Los Angeles type Mexican American fare. Food is your typical Americanized Mexican variety except you actually receive home cooked and perfectly seasoned food. Their rice is to die for when prepared correctly. Be forewarned, sometime s the Spanish rice is undercooked to where it's still crunchy. I get you not. I still don't understand why this is happening. Taco's are awesome! Most of the menu items are very good. I do think they put too much cheese on their food. But Americans tend to love their cheese. Not the greatest Mexican based food in Kansas City and certainly not the worst. One of the oddest things is the ever present squeeze bottles of Parkay butter that sit on the tables.....Ha ha. I'm serious. Sounds crazy but put some of that Parkay butter on a hot tortilla....... oh my God!!! Heaven. Love their salsa as well. Used to be a frequent hangout for the KCK Police Department and Sheriffs Department. Why?.....They got fed for free. Prices are fairly cheap. Service isn't bad. Limited seating. Parking sucks to high heaven! Be very careful because if you park in the wrong spot, expect t be towed. Not hard to find if you're familiar with the Armourdale KCK neighborhood. Sits on the main strip known as Kansas Avenue. Not far from KU Medial Center, the Missouri River, Kaw River, I-70, and I-35. neighborhood has changed dramatically over the years. Not a bad area by any means. I highly recommend visiting Ninfa's for dine-in or to grab a bag of their succulent homemade tortilla's. My grandmother made her tortilla's the exact same way and nothing compares in all of Kansas City. Here's all you need to know; many of the old school Mexican immigrants and current newbie's from Mexico go to Ninfa's for their tortillas to prepare family dinners. If it's good enough for them, what more do you need to know?

Ventured here today with the work gang. I got lost. Whatev. Use GPS, you'll get there. What a Dive, people. I say this and give it 3 stars becuase it's what we were looking for...a Dive. Decent food, VERY good service. This place serves-up Mexican fare on a styrofoam plate (don't freak out) with a plastic fork and knife jammed into your food. Yep. True ambiance. When you sit down they serve a container of home made warm flour tortillas to munch on. They were tasty. We had a very nice young man as our server and he quickly took our order, made nice recommendations and then promptly refilled our drinks. The food was pretty good. I had the #3 which was a chicken burrito spread (meaning there's more cheese on top!), a cheese and onion enchiliada and rice & soupy beans. The chicken burrito was tasty with nice whole beans inside, nice chunks of white meat chicken and tasty salsa and seasonings. It appears all of the food is put into the microwave once assembled to melt the cheese. This part was not my favorite. So, my cheese and onion enchilada wasn't melt-y inside. The girls who had the pork tamales I think were the happiest. I would eat here again and try the tamales.

  • P M.

Get your tortilla's to go. They are the best tortillas around and there's not even a close second. The restaurant staff is nice and this place is about as laid back as you can get.... it kind of feels like you're eating in a garage. As much as I hate to say it, the food isn't that great. The food is assembled and microwaved... it feels like your eating leftovers. Rice is far from fluffy and the tamales were okay.

Tortilla Tortilla Tortilla!!! You can't go wrong with these homemade delicious things filled with their salsa. We always end up leaving with 2 bags of to-go tortillas and a container of the salsa. The menu food is great as well. I always get the pork burrito and taco. The rice runny rice is my favorite. They do serve on styrofoam (I think because lack of kitchen space) which I don't mind. If you are looking for some quality hole in the wall Mexican this is the place. Skip Fronteras, Mi Ranchito, and Jose Peppers and their terrible American Mexican food.

The best tortillas ever...bar none. Great food all prepared by hand, tortillas & salsa made in house. Breakfast is great here, Tacos are also outstanding if you aren't into the whole breakfast thing. Either way get some torts to go as you leave.

  • Reed N.

Simple place. Busy lunch. Good take out. AND you should be buying your tortillas here. When you walk in it is a little dive. Look beyond the cashier stand, prep counter and griddle and you see sacks of flour. Yup, they actually make tortillas here. You get two flour torts per person as a starter instead of chips. Open the warmer and it smells like fresh wheat. Very nice! The salsa is fresh and homemade. That means it is runny with no thickeners as the tomatoes release their juice.... but very tasty. They are known for the tamales, and they are tasty. I would recommend the crispy flour taco for first timers, though. Just wonderful.

This place is right on Kansas Ave. I thought it to be ok. Maybe because I am too used to American style Mexican food but I love Frontera's. The chicken Enchilada's are good. The chicken is very moist and the red sauce goes well with it. The beef is not bad either. I love guacamole dip. I ordered some and thought it was bland. It would have been fantastic if they would add a little seasoning. Perhaps an over the counter seasoning pack you buy from the store. It tasted fresh and the chips were pretty good. Overall it's all about their fresh house made tortilla shells you eat with butter.

  • Corey C.

I have to admit, I was a bit shocked that they brought out tortillas instead of chips and salsa, but after one bite my shock turned to euphoria. I've never heard of eating tortillas & butter, but these were the best tortillas I've ever had - period. For my meal I ordered the Fried Flour Taco plater - one with Beef and one with Pork. The portion was enormous - each taco made from a burrito sized tortilla. Both the beef and the port were fabulous - but if I did it again I would go all beef - it was awesome. I will be back in the very near future!

  • Michael S.

Came up to visit my brother he took me here. Wonderful food. Everything was great. Try the fresh torillas and hot sauce with the butter. Kind of sounds weird but it was good. I was a bit skeptical but it was probably the best part of the meal. It's not on the most attractive side of town, but give it a try anyway.

    (5)
  • Jordan H.

Go for the tortillas - skip everything else. The tortillas alone are worth five stars, but the lackluster menu of Americanized tacos and burritos (and very odd-tasting red sauce) drop it down. I ordered a dozen tortillas and they were gone in two days. I wrapped everything in them.

    (4)
  • Roger S.

If I could make an entire meal out of their tortillas, I would. Ninfa's is definitely a well kept secret, and even if you don't want to sit down and eat, you should at least buy some warm tortillas to take home with you - they are head and shoulders above what you'll get in the supermarket. I'm a picky eater and usually pass on the salsa, but on all accounts I've heard, it's great. (For the record, I'm damn close to being a meat-only eater). There's plenty of menu options, and I don't believe I've gotten the same item twice. At some point, I'm sure I'll come back to one of the items I've had before after I've satisfactorily exhausted all my options. I've been more than a few times, and I'm sure to go again. I think you should too.

They also have Parkay, which at first might be a turn-off, but I've found that a mixture of Parkay and salsa, wrapped up in a warm tortilla, is close to perfection. The meals at Ninfas are huge for the price. Generally I get a combo with burrito spread, a huge soft taco, rice and beans, for about $5.50. With a soda, tax and tip, you're out about $10. And, you're completely stuffed. Parking can be a pain in the ass, as it is really only street parking. Finally, for dessert, there is a Mexican bakery down the street, which is hard to beat.

Best homemade tortillas I've ever had! The homemade fresh taco sauce on every table and the pico de gallo is delicious! Fast, courteous service - excellent lunch place hidden in KCKS. A true "hole-in-the-wall" gem. Family owned and operated - support the local independent - come here instead of the huge franchises. It's worth it! I never leave w/o taking a dozen tortillas home with me.

If you're looking for great tamales, then this is the place! So many tamales have way too much masa but I've always enjoyed the tamales from Ninfa's. Great flour tortillas made right there so always fresh! Their salsa is great too. I load up at Christmas and share with the family.

If you have never experienced Ninfas, it's well worth the journey. It's not in an easy to find place, but hands down the best tortillas in town. They make fresh tortillas every morning. 800-1200 dozen. People line up just to come get them every day. Instead of your typical chips/salsa at a Mexican restaurant, Ninfas serves up fresh tortillas, with butter and their freshly made salsa. Yummy. Try the fried corn taco plate or the fried flour taco plate if you're hungry.
